Masters Weekend

In 2024, 8-10 November, we ran a very successful Masters’ Weekend in the Dingle Skellig Hotel in association with Screen Ireland; the weekend focused on one of the four-zone festival structure we have established underpinning our festival framework outlined below.

Our 2024 festival featured five different talks with leading film industry figures, including multi-talented musician, broadcaster and producer of Other Voices, Philip King, Hollywood feature film producer, Ned Dowd, renowned film producer Winston Azzopardi, legendary Hollywood Casting Directors Ros Hubbard and Maureen Hughes, and award-winning Irish documentary directors, Mark McLoughlin, Brenda Ní Shúilleabháin, and James Byrne. Alongside these popular talks, we had three evening film screenings – acclaimed film, That They May Face the Rising Sun, Wonder Boys and ending the weekend with smash hit, Oscar-nominated film Kneecap.

Film Screenings

All screenings start at 8pm, doors open 7.30pm.

Fri, Nov 8th: WONDER BOYS with an introduction and post-screening Q&A with Ned Dowd, Executive Producer
Wonder Boys is an acclaimed comedy-drama film based on the Michael Chabon novel, directed by Curtis Hanson, starring Michael Douglas. The film received three Academy Award nominations. Famed critic Roger Ebert said, “This is a funny and touching story that contains dead dogs, Monroe memorabilia, a stolen car, sex, adultery, pregnancy, guns, dope and cops but it is not about any of those things. It is about people and especially about trying to be a good teacher.” (Rated 16)

That They May Face The Rising Sun

Sat, Nov 9th: THAT THEY MAY FACE THE RISING SUN with an introduction and Q&A with Philip King, Producer
A recent winner of Best Film at the Irish Film and Television Awards, this acclaimed adaptation of John McGahern’s final novel directed by Pat Collins (Silence, Song of Granite) is “a lyrical celebration of the everyday”. The Irish Film Institute said the film “sensitively interprets McGahern’s work, drawing out the novel’s deceptive simplicity, and transforming an enclosed world into an everywhere.” (Rated 12A)

Sun, Nov 10th: KNEECAP
What do we need to say about this fiercely original sex, drugs and hip-hop biopic? It’s taken Ireland and the festival world by storm, kick-started an Irish language revival, and it’s only getting started on its journey. This is a once-in-a-generation, sure-to-be-a-classic film about the infamous and brilliant Irish-language rap group, Kneecap, playing themselves, supported by Kerry’s own Academy-Award nominee, Michael Fassbender. Winner of the coveted Audience Award at the Sundance Film festival, as well as Best Irish Film, Best Irish language Feature Film, and Audience Award at the Galway Film Fleadh – a feat that has never happened in 36 years! (Rated 16)
